State Legislative Summaries

Introduction

Since 2003, Communities for Quality Education (CQE) has documented all 50 states taking significant action against the flawed implementation and shortcomings of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law.  The grassroots rebellion in the states against the law continues in 2007 with an increasing number of state seeking to influence the Congressional reauthorization of the law.

In fact, opposition is coming from state legislators from both parties and education leaders across the country.

The actions taken to fix No Child Left Behind range from demands in state legislatures for the money to pay for the costs, to calls for exemptions from particular federal regulations. Some have now even filed lawsuits challenging the unfunded costs that are passed on to local schools and taxpayers that are specifically prohibited by the law.
